I'm not really surpised that Kalan and SBMG parted ways. Kalan hinted at such in his last chat. Like
Shorty mentioned there is a whole lotta legal, logistic and financial aspects. When Ryan and SBMG parted ways they forgave Ryan his debt and gave him the rights to his songs. It was a very amicable parting of ways.
I personally don't get the sense that Kalan parting with SBMG went as smoothly or as amicable to that of Ryan. Kalan would have debt from working on the 3rd CD, plus who knows if his debt had been recovered from his 1st two CD's. SBMG may still want to recoup this money in the future. I also think they were more tied to his songs so they may want to keep them even if they never use them. This would mean that
if Kalan is going to continue with a music career that he would have to start all over with debt over his head unless his family bails him out. I know it is none of my business, but how can Kalan start over without financial support. Does he have any or is he making money working as a studio musician for others etc.
Maybe I am over reading things, but I think Kalan's trip to NY was more about time to think about being a musician as a career. He loves being on tour, but hates the business end of things. Maybe he was examining this singing thing as a career. Kalan could go indie, but I don't think he has the knack for marketing himself. IMO he barely makes an effort to stay connected. He doesn't blog. I haven't been to his myspace in ages, but the last time I was there he hadn't been on there in ages, he's only chatted twice in over a year and he goes days without tweeting anything.
So now... are they expecting him to crawl back and succumb to their terms??
OR... can he court a new label?
Or... will he be made a Pariah??
Lahlah- I believe the answer to the first is no. Once a contract is over/broken there is usually no going back and I don't think that is the answer for Kalan. 2) He can court a new label, but who and at what terms. 3) Kalan will always have a stigma of CI, but it is up to him to work beyond that label. Kalan has made friends in the industry he just has to build on that if he wants to.
At this point I would like Kalan to confirm he still has plans to be a solo artist. If he is going to go back to school or do something else than he needs to inform his diehard fans.
