Kalan not with SBMG

I thought I would post this message from another thread:

Quote
Vic, it wasn't a tweet from Kalan, it was a tweet from Sony_Music to Terribledancer. Let me find it for ya.

TerribleDancer    AND THERE YOU HAVE IT!! RT @Sony_Music Unfortunately Kalan isn't w/SonyMusic anymore but we're confident he's working on more great music..

Kalan's recent Tweet's:

Feb 3/10-Ok. Decided I'm heading to New York for a few days. And when I get back... I'm makin some big decisive decisions. And not lookin back.

Jan 26/10- But even if I don't respond... I read them and they keep me motivated when stuff sucks. So thank you. I promise this record will be great.

Jan 26/10 Thanks again for your patience guys. I ran out long ago.
6:37 PM Jan 26th from web Workin like mad on some lyrics. Hopefully legal garbage will be

I am not sure the timeline on the twitter report that Kalan is no longer with SBMG and if that is what Kalan was talking about in his chat last fall/summer.  I don't know what this means in relation to his recent tweets about legal issues.  I wish Kalan would be more open as to what is going on or what he can divulge.  Is the split recent?   Is he fighting to keep the music he worked on and recorded?  Does he have to start from scratch, again?  Are we even going to see a new CD anytime soon and I mean our soon and not Kalan's soon.  Kalan tweeted thanks for your patience, but it is hard to be patient and motivated to keep interest when we don't know when and if Kalan will continue with music and ever have anything new out and a tour to support

I don't want to sound pessimistic, but until Kalan says what is going on it doesn't look or sound good for 2010.

Re: Kalan not with SBMG

Definitely a big decision. Hopefully his next record label cares more about the artist and the truth of the music more than dollar signs and numbers.

Re: Kalan not with SBMG

Leaving a record company would be a much bigger decision than just stuff about an album. Especially since the record company is the one who's made all the contracts for him. A few issues that would come up would be: does he need to buy out his songs he recorded from S/BMG? Does he continue to receive any profit? Will they let him keep the songs he's worked on for the next album and bring them to someone else? Etc. There's lots of stuff revolving around the decision to leave a record company. Especially if he was still under a contract with them, because breaking contracts is a hard thing to do.

I think "make an album or not" is not really a big decision at all compared to switching companies and leaving companies.

Yup...  you could have knocked me over... blahblahblah when they answered me...

I think it is interesting that they said "when he is ready"...  they might very well OWN his songs...  [I never considered the possibility of 'buying out'...   WHEW!  I despaired that they might be 'lost FOREVER'!!  lol],  methinks...

So now...  are they expecting him to crawl back and succumb to their terms??

OR...  can he court a new label?

Or...  will he be made a Pariah??   Undecided

Is there a 'time restriction' before he can move on?

and...  Who thought Ricky's comment was a tad 'random'??

This must be very stressful, but hopefully, also a relief and energizing/exciting for Kalan...   Now he can get on with the REST of his LIFE!!

I just hope that includes MAKING MUSIC...  and rather selfishly... that I get to experience/SHARE his Music!!

Yeah I'm not surprised. I figured he was waiting out that contract. I just hope it doesn't mean he now has ownership issues with the stuff he's written while under the contract.

Re: Kalan not with SBMG

I guess I'm a little surprised, didn't really think he had the cajones to do it. Maybe they "let him go".

No matter, that SBMG thing was a contest prize IMO, I'm facinated to see what he does now.

Re: Kalan not with SBMG

I'm not really surpised that Kalan and SBMG parted ways.  Kalan hinted at such in his last chat.  Like Shorty mentioned there is a whole lotta legal, logistic and financial aspects.  When Ryan and SBMG parted ways they forgave Ryan his debt and gave him the rights to his songs.  It was a very amicable parting of ways.

I personally don't get the sense that Kalan parting with SBMG went as smoothly or as amicable to that of Ryan.  Kalan would have debt from working on the 3rd CD, plus who knows if his debt had been recovered from his 1st two CD's. SBMG may still want to recoup this money in the future.  I also think they were more tied to his songs so they may want to keep them even if they never use them.  This would mean that if Kalan is going to continue with a music career that he would have to start all over with debt over his head unless his family bails him out.  I know it is none of my business, but how can Kalan start over without financial support.  Does he have any or is he making money working as a studio musician for others etc.

Maybe I am over reading things, but I think Kalan's trip to NY was more about time to think about being a musician as a career.  He loves being on tour, but hates the business end of things.  Maybe he was examining this singing thing as a career.  Kalan could go indie, but I don't think he has the knack for marketing himself.  IMO he barely makes an effort to stay connected.  He doesn't blog. I haven't been to his myspace in ages, but the last time I was there he hadn't been on there in ages, he's only chatted twice in over a year and he goes days without tweeting anything.

Lahlah- I believe the answer to the first is no.  Once a contract is over/broken there is usually no going back and I don't think that is the answer for Kalan. 2) He can court a new label, but who and at what terms.  3) Kalan will always have a stigma of CI, but it is up to him to work beyond that label.  Kalan has made friends in the industry he just has to build on that if he wants to.

At this point I would like Kalan to confirm he still has plans to be a solo artist. If he is going to go back to school or do something else than he needs to inform his diehard fans.

Re: Kalan not with SBMG

I'm staying positive about things. I know things will work out for him. And he knows what he is doing and what is right for him. Plus I don't think SBMG would of let him go HELLO HE'S A GREAT ARTIST. They were pretty supportive when he wanted to be with his family b/c of his mother.

Plus he has the right to let us know what he want's us to know. It's his life. If he want's to be open with us then he will.

So lets drop the subject ok peeps.

P.s. Kalan if you are reading this keep your head up high I know stuff in life sucks but you have to keep thinking positive. I suggest you read Micheal J Fox's Lucky Man. it's a F-ING good book.  Wink

Um, no, unfortunately they weren't.  There were a lot of hassles, a LOT, even way back then.

Sony in Canada is basically nothing more than a distribution system.  Hopefully Kalan will be able to find another label (and a better manager) that will give him the support he needs and deserves.
