American Idol Past, Present and Future

David A released his CD last week and David C releases his this week.  Here is a link where you can listen to David A's CD.  http://music.aol.com/new-releases-full-cds/#/1

Here is a review of David's CD

Quote
David Archuleta
Album: David Archuleta
Label: Sony BMG
Rating: **

American Idol judge Simon Cowell always had a twinkle in his eye for David Archuleta. It was inspired by dreams of the multi-platinum sales a fresh-faced boy with a big voice could generate. Archuleta didn’t win Idol, but he’s  getting the  star  treatment, nonetheless. A small army of corporate writers and producers was assigned to carefully polish the life out of his debut. The moms will love it. Not sure about the kids, though.

Here is a Q&A article on David A.

David Cook's CD is floating around so I had a listen.  It is much more my style than David A's.  IMO it is similar in style to Daughtry's CD, but I don't find the songs quite as catchy.  The songs I like are " Life on the Moon" and "Permanent".

Here is an article on David Cook.

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future

Paula Abdul was on Martha Stewarts' show today (december 10) pimping the new season of american idol while attempting to make chocolate cookies... she was annoyingly flaky, and kept up the whole "paula vs. simon" fake hate thing that they do every single year. Roll Eyes I swear this is the year i am going cold turkey and will not watch any part of the american version any more. Tongue

.
Gee, I guess that does start some time in January...    Gggaaahhh... They stretch their show out so long...  there must be at least 5 weeks of the 'audition' shows, and I believe that is two nights per week!  It goes on for 4-5 months...

Our show barely gets 3 months, and it is shuffled into the summer months, normally saved for fillers...  We even get 'bumped' around the time schedule if some big fancy US show wants to make its presence known...  THANX, CTV!!
*whimper*

[re:  Pauler...  did she mention that there will be 4 'judges' this year?]

But, its the doldrums of January, so I'll probably tune in...
Nothing else watch
*sigh*

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future

Nope, she never mentioned another judge, but again, she was VERY loopy...my mom watched it too and she thought she was drunk! Cheesy

I agree that the American versions audition shows go on for too long. Who cares about all the people that didn't make it?! Especially if they're going into the auditions wearing silly costumes...those are the people who just want to be on tv. =P
I love that the Canadian version doesen't stretch the show that way--it keeps the focus on finding someone who can sing, which (at least i think) is how it should be. Another thing i really liked about our version is how for awhile they kept the results show to a half hour, and filled it with the top singers doing songs in small groups. That was a nice way to fill the time instead of all the stall techniques that the American version uses to fill up a 1 hour time slot. I hope C.I. does that again with their new season in 2009.

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future

I heard this morning that there will be a few new changes to AI this year.

1) They will be showing less of the bad auditions and showing more inspirational auditions. What they intend, I am not sure.

2) They will be going back to the wild card selections

3) They will have a top 36 and then weild it down to a top 12.

4) idol gives back has been dropped this year due to the economic climate.

Should be interesting having another female judge.

For those who liked Michael Johns, he has a CD coming out in March.

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future

I am happy to see all of those... except the loss of Idol Gives Back, which is terribly unfortunate, but I guess understandable.

I really do like the wildcards. Wildcards really would have come in handy for those times when fans didn't vote hard enough because of assumptions that their person was safe (*coughcoughLiamChangcoughcough*).

Though I really do think that Canadian Idol finally got it right this year in the way they eliminated down to the top 10. Tossing the male vs female concept, and mixing up the groups each week for complete randomosity. I honestly think it's the most fair and accurate way of eliminating people (save for making everyone perform and vote on the same day, which would garner the most accurate votes, but obviously not all that do-able when you start off with 24 contestants. You'd have a 4 hour show!).

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future

Apparently, Canadian Idol has been cancelled and will not air in 2009. May return in the future. I read it on another forum, then found this article:

I agree with all your points here Crunkette. The Canadian version did a lot of things right to make the show more interesting and fair to the contestants (and even the viewers to truly pick a winner that they like!).
I'm sure conspiracy theories have been talked about before, but especially with A.I. not wanting to budge in regards to a truly random contestant order, it really gives weight to the idea that they really could be "helping along" certain contestants by keeping the male/female groups separate. And when you consider the potential revenue to be made from the American version (the tour, merchandise, album sales, etc.) the stakes are obviously a lot higher than they would be here.

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future

I have!

So far I've only concluded a few unfortunate things:

1) The auditioner gimmicks are clearly out in full force this year

2) AI Audition Rounds still exist simply to embarrass unsuspecting kids

3) Auditions suddenly feel "scripted" in that they're clearly asking people to sing specific songs for the sole purpose of making montages out of them. wtf?

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future

That's why AI doesn't quite appeal to me, its so gimmicky, and not just those auditioning.  But alas I have watched none the less.  I think I do just in hopes of finding someone special that will be around come the top 10/12 whatever they do.  I like Cody Sheldon and a few others!

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future

I watched about 5-10 minutes this past week and did not feel inspired to watch anymore than that.  I saw that girl walk in wearing a bikini singing some diva song ( Mariah I think) and arguing with the new judge.  I flipped back later and saw those wanna be rappers and them keep showing some blind guy coming up, but I didn't flip back to see him perform.  I find the US auditions so over the top and the fact that the shows have been two hours just way too much.

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future

I agree lyra.  I do watch each show in its entirety and it wasn't too impressive.  I hate that the bikini girl got through.  And argued like she was good enough, yeah then don't show up in a bikini then and let your voice alone get you through.

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future

.
AI has become such a production and a machine.  I can't believe that I had it on both nights for TWO HOURS.  Tho' it wasn't as annoying as I seem to remember other years have been, so perhaps they are not focusing on the UGLY as much as they have in the past.

I find that the US market likes music which does not appeal to me very much.   I am not into the trilling, belting  and melisma which seems to be preferred there.   Could you imagine Earl or Mookie on that show?  LOL.   Yet, they were the spice for our show, last year.   I wish Liam could have made it into the competition, proper.   [Is he still young enough to give it another try?  In 2010, I guess...  *whimper*]
 Cry

Does anyone know whether AI is doing away with the 50/50 split on gender, this year?
