Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future
Quote
I find that the US market likes music which does not appeal to me very much. I am not into the trilling, belting and melisma which seems to be preferred there. Could you imagine Earl or Mookie on that show? LOL. Yet, they were the spice for our show, last year.
Hi, lahlah. I know what you mean.
Mookie or Earl on AI...not likely. Not sure why, since they're good and if they showed up to audition it would be hard to refuse them. But in the US I'm not sure they'd show up. Since the show represents a certain type of singing.
Then again, we haven't seen all the auditions yet, so who knows? Maybe another David Cook will emerge--or a Jason Castro.
I know what you're saying because the melisma and trilling has never appealed much to me, and that's one reason I've never really watched AI much. But I don't really think AI represents the type of music the US market likes. Just a few types. (I suppose they have to narrow it down somewhat, since the US market is really so varied?) Here in the US, AI is popular, but it's not really thought of as representing the most popular music or singing styles, and I don't think it does. In a way I think it represents the judges' tastes; if they had Zack and Sass, perhaps more rock would be represented? Or it represents what's "safe" for network TV, and for the demographic that watches it. I don't know. I read something interesting about that the other day: the show is now mainly watched by people over 40.
There are a few articles online about the various changes happening to AI.
This one is an interview with Fox's "president of alternative entertainment," Mike Darnell.
http://www.tvweek.com/news/2009/01/return_of_idol_a_win_for_darne.php
It's pretty long, but says in part:
Quote
TVWeek: Can we expect surprises as the season goes along?
Mr. Darnell: Yeah. There’s a big surprise coming when we get to the top 12, but I can’t reveal it right now.
TVWeek: Will it change the way we think of “American Idol?”
Mr. Darnell: Well, it’s not going to change what you think of “American Idol” and we don’t want to do that. This show is, you know, a phenomenon. It’s American, it’s apple pie. We’re not changing the core of the show, but it is something that will be talked about and is something I think that has some element of controversy surrounding it.
TVWeek: Do the contestants know?
Mr. Darnell: No. No one knows.
TVWeek: Is that part of it? You want to keep the contestants guessing?
Mr. Darnell: Part of it. But I also think it’s more that it’s a long season and you want to keep as many surprises for the audience, for the press, for everybody, as you go along. Some controversies will pop out. But this is something that we sort of felt like, here’s one set of things we’re doing, we’re going to wait and give you the other set when we get to the final 12.
In another article (here:
http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/la-et-idoltracker13-2009jan13,0,1241919.story
),
he says:
Quote
We're going back to sort of a raw feel," he said. In the middle rounds, after singing and being judged, the contestants will immediately be confronted by host Ryan Seacrest rather than being allowed to retreat backstage, as in the past.
So you see if they're upset with what Simon said, you get to see it right away instead of them going backstage," explained Darnell. "It's really the rawness of what's happening. How do they feel right after? How do they feel stepping off that stage? They can't hide it. They can't cover it up.
It seems like they watch Canadian Idol pretty closely, eh?
So could the change in the top 12 be: no gender split? What do you think? I don't know.
*scrathches head*
I know that they're going to have a Top 36 this year rather than Top 22. That's about all I heard.

Thanx for popping in, Josh, and adding your thoughts.
I can remember quite a few times on CI, when they literally followed the kids down the hall while they were crying or in shock... Or ANGRY. You might be on to something.
Also, they have that big 'Winners Poster' backdrop in the audition room this year, and are using rooms with windows so you can see the cities outside... I have seen all of these on CI!!
I certainly HOPE they are banishing the equal-gender split... Perhaps they will have a Wild Card??
Did anyone happen to hear the song they used over the final credits?
*sigh*

To be honest I'm confused why they used that song... unless it was that guy's favourite song or something, it seems seriously out of context to use it in a "yay I won a gold ticket to American Idol" sense.
Aaaat any rate, I'm still not thrilled by the season. So many over the top singers. The only one I have any desire to see more from so far was that Adam guy. Don't remember his last name. Even he was (like the judges said) kinda theatrical, but at least that can be worked on. Some of these other people are just totally pushing it, or trying to sound like the original belters/artists and it just doesn't come off as real or something I'd want to listen to.

Tonight's show was a little better... some people who showed some actual natural talent versus all the put on stuff! Maybe there's some hope yet.

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future

This show is so highly 'edited'... wot with the button-pushing music [and suggestive lyrics, depending on the situation]. Plus, I am sure they mess with the Time Line, and show us stuff out of sequence... With only wee glimpses of some of the Best Ones!
I have also heard a theory that they decide the kind of singer they want to win, and 'cast' the show with potential winners [even choosing the ONE they want to win], as well as possible runners-ups, and 'cannon fodder' [fillers who they use while the ones they want can establish themselves], ...and even 'Clowns', for entertainment value. [It backfired on them last year,

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future
I didn't watch this weeks shows, but I just came across this article:

Horse pucky in Kentucky

‘Idol’ auditions aren’t much better in Louisville
Yaaaaaawn. Hmm? Oh, American Idol last night. It was in Louisville, KY, and it stank. It stank almost as much as the horses at Churchill Downs must do after an unsettling breakfast.
No wonder Idol was down about 10 per cent last week from its 2008 season première. Could this be the end for the ratings monolith? Judging from Louisville, looks like it.
In the opening shot, there was little Ryan Seacrest on the horse track, looking for all the world like a very tanned and excited jockey. Then, a brief dispute over the pronunciation of the city’s name – is it Lou-iss-ville, L-oui-ville or Luuuuurville? I’m partial to the latter, just ‘cause saying it makes me feel like Ludacris.
Among those who assaulted my ears were Tiffany Shedd (a bitter Betty if I ever saw one), Irene Anguelela (who looked suspiciously over the age limit) and some girl who sounded like Minnie Mouse with vibrato run amok.
And then there were the just plain strange contestants: Mark Mudd, who threatened the judges with “be careful” on his way out; “Cara Mia” singer Ross Plavsik, who arranges Chinese characters for fun; and foot-stomping, hyper-enthusiastic Aaron Williamson, who pleaded with judges to let him be America’s Next Top Model. Laughing. Out. Loud.
There were some promising candidates, though, whom the judges let through. Joanna Pacitti previously had a record contract, and Brent Keith Smith reminded me of stubbly, skeevy Spencer Pratt, though I’m sure he’s a perfectly nice boy. Duelling piano player Matt Giraud worked a Justin Timberlake vibe, while stay-at-home mom Alexis Grace sang “Dr. Feelgood” with gusto.
The girl who stole my sympathy, though, was Lenesha Young, a poverty-stricken 18-year-old who lived in shelters growing up. She did something revolutionary for karaoke-loving Idol: she sang an original (and more-than-decent) song.
All in all, a mere 19 people out of 11,000 auditioners made it through to Hollywood. Next stop, Jacksonville, Fla. Here’s hoping my ears can make it through the night.

Barack Obama was inaugurated on Tuesday, of course, and I read that Fox was the only broadcast network here in the US not carrying inaugural events on Tuesday night. I myself wasn't really watching the inaugural balls but I wasn't in the mood to watch AI, either, for some reason. (San Francisco auditions.) After the history-making events of the day, AI seemed superfluous and uninteresting...I couldn't get into it. And that feeling carried over into Wednesday, as well. I'm sure many people here were watching news shows or news networks rather than AI on Fox. It was a very exciting time, and AI didn't fit into it at all, so I'm not surprised the ratings weren't great.

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future
Your welcome BTS!
There are a lot of clips of Adam on YouTube. This is Dust In The Wind.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xxA81F278Y
I think it's sort of show-tuney. Then again I've never especially understood why that's considered such a bad thing by the CI and AI judges. What kind of music is the preferred music for the "Idol" to sing, anyway? Some of the judges said Adam was "theatrical," but I guess I don't know why that's bad. Personally, I'm not crazy about him, but I'm interested in seeing him on the show again, to see what his style is, and what his song choices are. Whether he'll please himself and be himself, or try to conform to what the show or the audience expects of him. I don't think somebody can go on a show like this and get very far without being who they are.
This is off topic, but I think it was you, BTS, who linked to the Jesse Cottam stuff on the CI thread...thanks. I like him, and I'm really glad he's with that band. He's very real. And BTW I guess that's more or less what I think I'm not feeling a lot of from Adam at this point.
