Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future
Alex doesn't particularly remind me of Kalan, but the judges comments to several of the men last night that they needed to feel and emote the songs certainly had me thinking about Kalan and CI2 in general. Lee and Mike were the only ones vocally that conveyed any type of emotive singing while Casey had the emotive guitar playing.
I feel pretty empty after watching last night. Here are my views on the guys from last night.
Mike
He doesn't sing the style that I particularly like, but this is the first time I enjoyed what he did.
John
The guy can technically sing, but cannot emote or connect to a song one iota
Casey
I loved his guitar playing, but his vocals were weak. I was entertained and would have fun at a bar seeing him perform.
Alex
I just don't get him at all. Technically nothing wrong and more emotive than John, but I was bored to tears. Maybe it was the song. The boy needs to cut the mullet.
Todrick
Is annoying as hell. It is ok to rearrange songs, but not the way he has been doing it. His arrangements and vocal tones for the songs he is picking just don't work. I know he seems confused with what the judges are telling him about not re-arranging songs when past contestants have been praised, but if he wants to suceed he needs to look at his approach and get constructive feedback so that he can perform renditions.
Jermaine
Everything about him turns me off. He is just an odd duck. I don't like his voice, personality and his back talk makes me think he is conceited or too overly confident in his abilities.
Tim
Ellen was right that he needs to do the Glee thing. I didn't hate his performance, but his look creeps me out.
Andrew
The only I can think about him is that his looks remind me a bit of Stephen Page. I can't even remember what he sang.
Aaron
Another David Archie like singer. Just not my cuppa.
Lee
I have seen some bashing on the net today about his song choice of Hinder, but I liked the song choice. His vocals weren't the strongest, but I do think he tried to convey some emotion and was fairly good overall.

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future
Bleh. This week was better than last week's disaster, but still there is absolutely nothing that jumps out as special to me from any of them yet.
Todrick needs to stop butchering songs to the point where they're unrecognizable (only a few people can pull off that kind of extreme arrangement mixing up, and it's NOT. HIM). Tim and Haeley need to gtfo the stage (VFTW I hate you), and Alex needs to cut his ugly hair. That's all I have to say about this week.
(How can you tell I'm not impressed this year?)

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future
I don't know why but I've liked Alex for a while now. Don't necessarily love his singing, but on TV I guess you tend to respond to personality. Though as a singer he makes a connection. He just seems real. It was funny when Ryan was talking to him, and he said "legit" and Ryan laughed at it. All the kids I know say "legit." How did that get started? I'm too old. lol
I can't stand Tim, for some reason. Like: hate.
Jim Cantiello's recap of the results is funny (and includes a special appearance. That was apparently filmed back in November.) If you didn't see the results show, this basically covers it in 60 seconds.

[I'm not sure if US MTV plays in Canada. I forgot. I don't get to see everything on Much's website here in the US.]
The results show is on YouTube (this is part 1 -- the other parts are in the sidebar):

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future
Although John was boring I would have preferred him to last one more week over Jermaine.
Crunkette
at least VFTW didn't keep Haeley in the competition.
Josh
Maybe Alex will grow on me. I don't dislike him, but I just don't get anything special about him yet. Maybe the mullett do is distracting me from what he is performing.
Ellen had Kimberley Caldwell on today singing her new song. Kim was barely audible. I don't think she garnered any fans from the appearance. Katherine McPhee will be on the Bonnie Hunt show on Thursday. Jason Castro performed on the Molly and Jason Wedding ( Bachelor) show last night. I caught him singing part of his new single and he sounded pretty good.
Josh
I see there is talk of Kris opening up for Keith Urban and Daughtry at some events. That sounds promising. I caught the view yesterday and Cherie talked to Kris at Elton John's Oscar party and red carpet.

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future
Funny how everyone talks about the mullet. I didn't even notice it until all the talk. I don't think it's a "true" mullet, though! It looks more like what I call a hockey player haircut.
Anyhow, last night I liked Didi (I like her a lot anyway), Lilly (less than usual, though I like her a lot, too), and Crystal, who's a fantastic singer and very "authentic," though I find her almost too professional. Her style is all figured out and I can't see her being the most fun Idol contestant (this is important to me in terms of the show, not her career, obviously). She's probably the best singer in the competition, but I'm not in love with her as a contestant. A lot of people are.
Guys tonight. Thanks, lyra, for the info about Kris on The View. I didn't know that. Did you guys see the picture of Kris and Allison with Elton (at Elton's Oscar party)? That was a great pic.

I thought Crystal and Siobhan were fantastic last night but I didn't like Lilly singing that Patsy Kline song. For some reason I never liked Didi's voice, JMO of course. The rest of them may as well go home...

Pretty much agree with all of this. Crystal and Siobhan are the two that stand out/appeal to me at all. The rest kind of run into each other with the same level of boredom. Disappointed with Paige last night... she's usually one of the better singers but she didn't do that song any justice at all.
Don't forget to pay good attention this week, since they're announcing the top 12 this week and then we'll do our good ol' attempt at a poll again.

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future
.
Still not really into the show this year, but there do appear to be a few more noticeable singers stepping up.
Crystal, of course could win the whole thing, especially as the judges [Simon] seem to favour her. She has a bit of an odd reaction to the 'judgements'... almost as tho she knows something... not up to Gokey levels, but still... I like Siobhan at this point... she reminds me of someone... Carly Rae, maybe?? I felt badly for Lillly having to follow Crystal. Country is not my thing, but I like some Patsy Cline. Didi did stand out as well.
For the guys, Big Mike's song disappointed me [esp. the way Randy carried on about it], but he still is hands on the best one, imho. I still like Casey too and Alex [face/ hair-wise he reminds me of a young Paul McCartney! lol ] I Loved the Ray Lamontagne song, and thought I heard a bit of John Mayer in there. Lee has a great rock voice, but I hated the song he did last week. I hope he stays away from crap like that!
I must say, I am enjoying Ellen's contributions to the judgements. She makes thoughtful and observant remarks and it seems to me that she has made Kara step up her comments, too. Simon seems to have 'backed off' a bit... not so tyrannical as last year. and Randy... Completely useless! I can't stand him!
So, I guess they are doing Rolling Stones songs next week... How I LOVED Kalan's Paint It Black... so dark and haunted! I wish he could have sung more of it.

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future
I'm with you Lahlah regarding Randy Jackson..I can't stand him either...he sure has a limited vocabulary....dawg,man,dude and dope oh and occasionally "hot"...I'd have sent him packing a LONG time ago!
I've never been a fan of Ellen but I must say, I too am enjoying her contribution to the show as well.

EEK! Please don't say that Siobhan reminds you of Carly Rae Lalah! I could NEVER stand Carly Rae and I really like Siobhan.
I still like Casey the best of the guys and Lee was ok too but I didn't get all the hype about Mike's performance. I preferred his song last week, JMO.

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future
I watch the show with my parents and this is their thoughts this week. My mom said that Paige sounded like a cow being murdered or their balls being cut off. My dad thinks that Kara is a moron and doesn't have an independent thought in her whole mind. He thought Kara just micmicked Ellen's opinions and her being all over Simon is completely annoying. He thinks Ellen should sit next to Simon to stop all the shenanigans at the judges table.
lahlah
I agree with Young that Siobhan does not remind me of Carly Rae and I am sort of insulted that you think so. Their vocal tones are nothing alike and Siobhan is likable where I find Carly Rae extremely annoying. If anything Didi's or Lacey's vocal tone are more like Carly Rae's. BTW Carly Rae is up for a juno as best new artist.
As for my opinion, for the girls I like Crystal. I didn't hate the others this week with the exception of Paige. I was expecting to dislike HOTRS from Siobhan, but I was pleasantly surprised. I wasn't blown away, but it was nice. As for the guys I think Andrew is a sure bet for going home this week although I kind of preferred him over many others last night. I definitely wasn't with the judges on Mike this week. It might have been a vocal masterclass that they keep referring to, but I disliked it. Mike and Todrick are just way to gospel for me and I certainly get a conceited vibe from both of them. At this point I am liking Lee and Casey more than the other guys.
Josh
my dad liked Alex alot and thought his song choice was great.

Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future

HaHa... I think you guys are right.. It might have been Didi who has that 'differentness' to her voice which reminded me of 'someone'...
possibly
Carly Rae!
I was disappointed in Mike this week as I preferred the more relaxed kinda r &b sound of his earlier songs... At this point I like Casey best [tho I hope Kara doesn't go all Couger all over him... YUK!! ], and will watch to see what Lee does... I believe America GOT IT
WRONG
bumping Alex over Andrew. I realize he would never have won the whole thing, but unless Andrew steps it up, I believe Alex would have been a better addition to the Top 10 Tour. jmho.
Now
Lilly
!
HOW DID
THAT
HAPPEN??
Unless being from Denver meant she had a smaller 'voting bloc'... I was looking forward to hearing her a few more times!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
eta:
OK... just went back and listened to the girls and,
Oh Yeah
!! Siobahn was the House of the Rising Sun girl... with the fabulous
a capella
intro! Definitely one of the Best! Lacey had the wild pink hair [and played the camera] and, you're right,
lyra
... both she and Didi had a bit of that whimsical/plaintive tone.
I also was reminded that Simon does NOT want Siobahn 'interfering' with his agenda for Crystal... he tried to talk her down by saying her House of the Rising Sun was TOO DARK!!
WOT??
!! **rolls eyes**
Hey kids, rock and roll.
Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future
Alright folks! We have our top 12!
1. List the top 12 in order of your preference. #1 being your fav, #12 being least fav.
2. Don't list them in order of anything except your preference. Make sure to list them in order of the ones you would most likely vote for. Don't influence your list by anyone else's lists, or by who you think will get through based on any other factors. Just you.
3. No ties. Force yourself to actually order them 1-12.
4. You're not required to explain your reasoning, but you can if you want. All I need is the list, though.
The top 12 in alphabetical order in case you need to refresh your memory:
Aaron Kelly
Andrew Garcia
Casey James
Crystal Bowersox
Didi Benami
Katie Stevens
Lacey Brown
Lee Dewyze
Michael Lynche
Paige Miles
Siobhan Magnus
Tim Urban
(yay I didn't forget anyone
who would turn out to be the winner
this year!
)
Just a reminder that we need as many lists as possible
before
the first Top 12 show next week!
I'll do mine in a bit. I need to do a bit of refreshing of my own since, well... a good portion of these people bore me to death. LOL.
Re: American Idol Past, Present and Future
Well, my favorite of the boys (Alex) and of the girls (Lilly) both got eliminated!! Now what do I do?
I don't like Siobhan's voice or singing style. Can't stand Tim. Katie doesn't do anything for me, nor does Aaron. I think Andrew and Lee have talent but they're dull performers so far. I guess I like Casey best, in a mild, not-totally-enthused kind of way. Etc.
Glad of that! Sheesh.
I'll rank the 12 soon. It's really late now.
